Three world records

Article by our Dutch visitors, Linda and Mark de Boer from Utrecht.

Winter sports in the Swiss mountains: for those of us who live in flat countries, it's always even more enjoyable. After exploring various resorts in the Bernese Oberland and Graubünden, this year we spent our skiing holiday in Saas-Fee. It was also a special week for us because we were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. We used that as an excuse for booking not just any room but the oldest room in the hotel. It is called "1893" and it's decorated in the style of that time. Reliving olden times while enjoying modern hotel comforts – what a memorable experience!

Magical mountain world
As soon as we arrived we were absolutely amazed by the eighteen 4000-metre peaks that surround the Saas valley. This is well-known for being the most snow-sure ski resort in the Alps and you can race down some perfectly groomed slopes here - from 3600 m right down to the village. We also enjoyed going on a sledging ride and several winter walks. The idyllic mountains, combined with perfect skiing conditions and sunny weather, made us feel we were in snow paradise. Then there are also three record-breaking attractions in Saas-Fee that we went to visit to celebrate our wedding anniversary:

Metro Alpin

An underground railway at 3500 metres above sea level? Yes, that's right! It's the Metro Alpin, which opened in 1984 as the world's highest underground funicular railway. Along a route about 1.5 km long, it goes under two glaciers! On our way to the terminus at Mittelallalin, we leaned back and enjoyed a spectacular ride, with gradients of up to 48%.

Allalin revolving restaurant

When we reached the top, we paid a visit to the highest revolving restaurant in the world, at 3500 metres above sea level. As we sat comfortably at our table and savoured the delicious cakes, the whole restaurant revolved through 360 degree on its own axis, in the space of an hour. Our views of the surrounding mountains changed constantly. Very impressive!

Ice Pavilion

After that wonderful panoramic view, we headed for the nearby Ice Pavilion. There, the centuries-old Saas glaciers were waiting to reveal their secrets to us. The "eighth wonder of the world" covers an area of 5500 m3 and was completely refurbished in 2016. We learned some fascinating facts, for example about whether there is life in the permanent ice and how deep a glacier crevasse can be. The tour also included a simulated avalanche with special lighting effects and an impressive shock wave that reverberates through your whole body.

What an exciting trip to mark our anniversary! But then we had to hurry back to the hotel, where a special "fondue chinoise" evening awaited us in the restaurant – our mouths were watering already! Then the next day we would have another wonderful day on the ski slopes before making our way back home on the following day.

Saas-Fee, thank you for your hospitality. We'd love to come back again one day, "tot ziens"!

Going back in time...

The Sunstar Hotel is the third oldest hotel in Saas-Fee. Spend the night in room "1893" and find out what it was like in those days, but with today's standard of hospitality.
